The three study areas
The ordinance divides the test into three areas. Here are the study notes for each, with practice questions.
Living in a democracy
Basic rights, the Grundgesetz and the rule of law, the five constitutional bodies, elections and the five electoral principles, parties, federalism, separation of powers and the welfare state — the largest area of the question catalogue, explained briefly and in plain language.
History and responsibility
The Weimar Republic and why it failed, 1933 and National Socialism, the Holocaust and Germany's lasting responsibility, the end of the war in 1945, the division of Germany, the GDR, the building of the Wall in 1961, 9 November 1989 and reunification in 1990.
People and society
Living together and freedom of religion, school and compulsory education, work and social insurance, family and equality between women and men, Germany in Europe, the national symbols — and the questions tested since 1 July 2024 on Jewish life, antisemitism and Israel's right to exist.
