German citizenship test Saarland — the 10 state questions explained

If you sit the test in Saarland, three of your 33 questions come from exactly these ten. The other 30 are federal. Questions from other states will not appear in your test.

Saarland was under French administration after 1945 and only came to the Federal Republic on 1 January 1957, after a 1955 referendum had rejected the European statute. It is the smallest non-city state, borders France and Luxembourg, and bears the name of its river. The Völklingen Ironworks recalls the age of coal and steel.

What to know about this state

After the Second World War the territory was under French administration and economically tied to France; only on 1 January 1957 did it join the Federal Republic, with the currency changeover following in 1959. Naturalisation applications are received by the six rural districts and the Saarbrücken regional association.
