Berlin is a city and a state in one, and since 1990 once again the capital of a reunified Germany. Its parliament is the Abgeordnetenhaus, its state government the Senat, and its leader the Governing Mayor. The Wall divided the city from 1961 until 9 November 1989. Enclosed by Brandenburg and crossed by the Spree, it houses the Bundestag, the Bundesrat and the Federal President's official residence.

What to know about this state
- Since 1990 Berlin has again been the capital of a reunified Germany. In 1991 the Bundestag resolved to move parliament and the seat of government here from Bonn. (www.bundestag.de)
- The state parliament is called the Abgeordnetenhaus of Berlin and meets in the building of the former Prussian Landtag. The state government is called the Senat and is led by the Governing Mayor. (www.parlament-berlin.de)
- From 1961 to 1989 the Wall divided the city. It fell on 9 November 1989, a date regarded as the turning point on the way to German unity. (www.berlin.de)
- The city's territory is entirely enclosed by the state of Brandenburg; no other state is surrounded by just a single neighbouring state. The river Spree runs through the city and flows into the Havel. (www.berlin.de)
- The coat of arms shows a black bear on a white field with a mural crown above it. The city's territory is divided into twelve boroughs, each with its own borough assembly. (www.berlin.de)
- The Bundestag meets in the Reichstag building and the Bundesrat in the former Prussian House of Lords. The Federal President has his official residence at Bellevue Palace. (www.bundesrat.de)
Because city and state are one and the same entity here, the parliament is called the Abgeordnetenhaus and the head of government the Governing Mayor. Since 2024 naturalisation applications have been processed centrally by the State Office for Immigration for all twelve boroughs; before that each borough office was responsible.
